My Honours Graduation on 18 July 2008

18 July 2007, i received my Bachelor Degree in International Hotel and Tourism Management. 1 year later on 18 July 2008, i achieved my Honours Degree in International Hotel and Tourism Management. my journey as a student finally ended. though the final result is not as good i hope to be, i am still happy and glad tat i have come this far. as the picture below stated, i only managed a Second Class Lower Honours. i was really very upset when i 1st received the email notification from my advisor saying that i got a Honours Class 2B. during then, i was halfway thru my travel in Darwin. my mood was totally affected. i spoke to quite a few pple via sms, phone and msn. glad tat i have these pple with me during tat very moment. it gave me some form of reassurance and their advice made me feel much better. after talking to them, the thought of not attending the ceremony totally vanished. i am really glad tat i made the choice to attend the ceremony even when i am disappointed with the ultimate results. though my result is the not perfect one, my graduation ceremony is definitely a fruitful one with wishes from family and friends. further to that, i brought home with me a bag of precious memories with many photos taken at the various "hot-spots".

Ajisen Ramen is in Brisbane!

Ajisen Ramen is in Brisbane! well, the restaurant is not really new as it has been in Brisbane for almost half a year liao. is juz tat it is my 1st time to the restuarant. i simply love ramen and i really like Ajisen Ramen. heehee... i am a big fan of Ajisen back in Spore so when it is here in Brisbane, i am really happy. Finally~! today i get to try it with Jia Ning and Vivian. it has been a long while since i last meet up with the gals, especially when i need not attend any classes this sem, i rarely see them around. today is a gathering day for us. unfortunately, Claudia is missing in action as she is down with fever.. poor girl.. hope she gets well soon! till the next time tat we meet, it will be our convocation, i guess.

nevertheless today has been a fruitful day with yummy food and lovely company. suppose to go for dessert at Freestyle but we decided to spare our stomach with overloaded amt of food so we went for Gelatissimo ice cream instead. before we had our ice cream, we walked around in the city to digest the large portion of ramen. seriously yummy ramen with very tasty soup base... i love it so much! but is juz too big portion so the walk around city acted as form of exercise for us to digest. hahaha... after buying the stuff that we wanna at the various shops & completing a very long survey, Jia Ning reminded us tat is dessert time! haha.. so off we went for the Gelatissimo ice cream... yummy~!!! i had the Profiterole flavour.. really nice.. milky and sweet.. :D brrrr... is actually quite cold today & yet we r having ice cream! having ice cream in winter is really a different feeling. is cold when the wind blow onto our face and is even colder when the ice cream sink in our stomach. whahaha... alrighty, enough of words.. is photos time!!!

Takopachi.. juz the rite size for an entree...

Japanese Gyoza..

Vivian said it reminded her of the chinese style breaky with pan-fried dumplings back at her home in China.. whahaha..

Tenderous Ribs Ramen...

something different... i nv see this in Singapore's Ajisen.. is yummy but if is a bit more spicy, it will be BEST!

Miso Cha-Shu Ramen..

looks good the cha-shu is very tender and yummy..

the 2 spokeswomen for Takopachi... :D

Vivian waiting to feast on this Volcano Ramen.. apparently it was so spicy tat she was sniffing away while eating.. hahaha.. but at the end, it was a very shuang feeling as described by her..

while walking along towards city, we saw policemen riding on horses! this is quite a rare scene in Brisbane as usually Brissy police goes around in their car. there r a few pple who r amazed by this scene and tried to take photos of the 2 policemen. we r one of them. heehee... y did they ride on horses instead of taking a car leh? dun ask me.. i am oso puzzled.

is always good feeling to be able to meet up with friends. they r my group mates from last semester and this will be the last few moments to meet up with them. we r having our convocation together, so i guess tat is gonna be an exciting and interesting moments with so many familiar faces around. hahaha... can't wait for tat day to come.. but of cos before tat, i have to face the reality. reality tat is i have to do packing and finish by tis coming Wed. reality is tat i have to face the release of results in early July.. when all these realities r realised, then is time to head towards my convocation.. still a long way... :P

PACK! PACK! PACK!

end of hibernation and slacking mode, is time to... PACK! PACK! PACK! haiz.. i am doing packing now.. YES! yet again! ever since i came to Australia to study, packing at the end of almost every semester seems to be a MUZ-do task. haiz... really dun like packing. so troublesome lor... argh~!!! the only consolation is tat this will be the LAST time i am doing packing for my studies in Australia and tat making packing much easier as all my stuff will only suffer either fate.. fate to be brought back to Spore so into the boxes and luggage OR fate to be thrown away so into the trash bags. i hope to throw more stuff away or leave them behind for others but i always can't bear to. now i muz brainwash myself "the more stuff u bring home, the more rubbish u have to clear from ur room in Spore. so clear the unwanted items NOW!" yes! i have to be clear abt tis. cannot shuang shuang keep tis and keep tat. >.<

hmm.. today last day of exam.. meaning really last day of semester liao wor... holidays officially starts tomolo. tis oso means tat my student concession card can no longer be used la. aiyooo.. have to pay adult price for transportation liao.. sianz... exp leh.. lucky is last week in Brisbane, try to go out less. but dun seems to be possible wor... meeting up with some friends over the week as this shld be the last chance i can meet up with most of them. yeah.. becos tis upcoming week will be my last week staying in Campus Lodge. exciting mth lying ahead in July with me having no permanent lodging, always on my move. haha... i will try to update my blog whenever i can and keep it alive even when i am on my move. so tat i wun lose my faithful audience. hahaha...

back to packing now... haiz..

my Honours Studies..

an entry abt my thesis as promised. so much to say abt this thesis which has been sucking my sweat, time and 'blood' for almost 10 months. phew~!!! finally is done and now my thesis is with the marker. so i can only await patiently for the verdict to be passed in few weeks' time. hopefully everything will be FINE! no matter wat, let me juz say watever i wanna say abt my thesis.

last Friday, it was a hectic moment when i was submitting my thesis. so much so tat i did not have the chance to prepare a copy of the thesis for myself. thus, i can't show u guys the actual product. i will get my own copy printed and binded next week so will provide the photo later on. just to share the cover page and acknowledgements page with u guys 1st.

Coverpage for my Thesis..

Acknowledgements page which i has show my appreciation for my supervisor, advisor, NP lecturers, interview participants, family and friends...

hectic submission as i only got back my thesis from my supervisor on Friday morning at abt 10am. he was away in Sydney for conference, hence was down in communication via internet. i got panic when he did not reply my email with my thesis by Thursday. so I had to call him on his mobile. since i did not get an extension for the submission, he promised to finish reading my thesis by Thursday nite and so tat i can submit on Friday. after picking up my Brother and Sis-in-law on Friday, i quickly printed out the final edited copy of my thesis. in total there are 103 pages and i have to print 2 sets for 2 different markers. with the very thick pile of papers, i proceeded to uni's copy shop for binding. then i submitted the 2 binded copies of over 100 pages of thesis to my department's reception. the 2 copies of thesis will be sent via uni's internal mail to the markers who are in a different campus as me. today i received the confirmation that my thesis has arrived safely at the other campus and are now with the markers. finally i can blog abt my thesis in peace. :D
so much to tok abt the thesis writing. to start, let me recap wat happen in this 1 year of Honours studies...

- Jul 07: got my Bachelor degree and also the start for my 1st sem for Honours Studies. Met up with my advisor, Dr Noel Scott to plan out my route of studies for my Honours. Settle on the courses I am suppose to undertake in this 1 year period.

- Sep 07: met up with my supervisor, Dr Charles Arcodia to discuss abt my ideas for my thesis. so many ideas running in my mind and many of them r ambigious and time consuming. Dr Arcodia narrowed down my ideas and helped me to stay focus to what i really intend to research on. at the same time, he advised me to consult any one who may be able to provide me with ideas and useful advice. so i discussed my ideas with Ms Elaine Cheng (my lecturer from Ngee Ann Poly), Auntie Cindy, Uncle Eric, Auntie Pat and Cousin Siang. their advice r useful for me to develop my scope of research.

- Oct 07: finally.. my research topic is set. i will look into the event tourism and tourism destination development in Singapore so i started to do some research and information collection.

- Nov 07: i had my last uni exam and the 1st sem of my Honours year finally ended.
- Dec 07: had my summer class. with the end of the 1 week summer class, i am officially done with all the coursework required for the Honours studies. no more lectures or tutorials to be attended. woohoo~!!

- Jan to Mar 08: back in Singapore for the information research and thesis writing. Thesis topic is finally set as Event Tourism and Tourism Destination Developments - Perceptions of Singapore Residents on How Event Tourism contributes to Singapore Tourism Developments.

- Apr 08: with half of the thesis done, i proceeded to conduct interviews with people from all walks of life to gather relevant and useful data for the research analysis.
- May 08: back in Brisbane to finish up the last bit of the thesis.

- Jun 08: completion of the FINAL thesis. edited by Auntie Cindy and vetted by Dr Arcodia. all set to be submitted for marking on 6th June 2008.

pretty much this was wat happened along my route to tis thesis completion. quite pleased with myself as i finally managed to finish the 20,000 writing. indeed it had been a tedious route for me when in times my mind was so stuck tat i could not generate good writing. at times, my biological clock was so screwed up tat i could go without sleep for the whole nite and stayed wide awake. at times, i really tot of giving up and juz refused to continue to write the thesis. my only tot was to run away from the reality and allowed myself to submerged in the world of TV series and drama. at times, when i really wanna give up, i would look back at the route tat i had taken so far. i had climbed up the ladder till tis stage, till tis far, am i going to give up at tis very last moment? i muz be a complete crazy idiot if i do so. so i juz hang on! i am not a good writer at all, my command of english is not good at all and so writing a 20,000-words write-up is kind of a challenge for me. no matter what the end result will be, i juz wanna thank myself for not giving up on myself and i am really proud of myself for the completion of this 20,000-words dissertation.

other than saying thank u to myself, i would like to thank the following pple:

- my advisor, Dr Scott and supervisor, Dr Arcodia for their advice, assistance and encouragement all these while and my lecturers from NP for their assistance and precious time set aside for the interview sessions.

- my family for going through every single moment in my uni studies life with me and for having constant faith and belief in me. esp thankful to Auntie Cindy for her strong financial support, constant encouragement and advice. without her, i guess i will not be wat i am today and i will not be at where i am today.

- my Spice buddies for enduring with my nonsense and giving me consistent support in watever i do. in order to be able to continue to study hard for my studies, mental support for any other business is very crucial and i am very glad tat my Spice buddies have been giving me the mental support needed to embrace thru every single challenge.

- Huifang for her help to edit my essays in the initial period of my uni studies. Wen Hui for editing my essays despite her busy schedule at work. Weijian for being my most faithful editor in proof reading most of my essays.

- all my friends (both in Singapore and Australia) for their constant concern and encouragement.

- all the interview participants for their responses which enable me to conduct a successful research.

- and to whoever that i have missed out, THANK YOU!

haha... sound like some award winning ceremony, saying thank u to so many pple. well, i juz wanna show my appreciation thru the easiest and most convenient way, blogging. heehee... :D

Labels for my entries from now on...

whahaha... i finally found out how to categorise my entries! as i was browsing my cousin, Seow Wai's new blog. i decided to look at her blog's source coding and try to rearrange into mine. heehee... finally i managed to add in some label and Categories... woohoo~ in tis way, my blog entries can be more organised with the specific categories. & tis give me an additional task to do after i finish my thesis. yeah.. something to pass time la cos by then i shld be rotting away till the time to travel and for my convo and head back Singapore. my additional task is to: Classify ALL my past entries into the various categories as set. wow! BIG task sia... cos i have over 400 entries la!!! whahaha...

alrighty! back to studies now after spending a few hours on organising my blog layout. i am very excited now cos i am finally at the concluding chapter... soon.. my entry on the thots for my thesis will b up. can't wait for tat faithful day ah! heehee...

study load vs productivity level..

i once told Huiying & Tess that i seems to perform better when i'm under alot of stress and pressure, as in when there r many things on hand for me to handle. when there r less things for me to do, i tends to slack and my productivity level juz drop. haiz... this is not good leh.. although i appreciate having an easier time with only 1 paper to take for exam, i guess i juz have to change my mentality. even with 1 paper for exam, i shld be studying hard and doing my revision diligently ah. y am i distracted so easily? gosh..

i need to find the motivation to sit down and study and concentrate. so where is my motivation? mmm... Perth trip? upcoming road trip? summer holiday with the company of dearest jas here in Brisbane? all these sound really wonderful and motivating enough to get me focus on studies juz for tis 2 weeks? yes! they r sufficient to make me work hard!!! i muz brain wash myself again... work hard! work hard! juz 1 more hurdle, tis sem will b cleared! after 12 nov, i will be FREE & there r heaps of things for me to do after exam so i muz be good girl and study now... if i wanna enjoy and study, i muz really study when is time to study!

hmmm... anyway, how does the idea of spending birthday on the board the plane sound? heehee... i am definitely not going back to Spore in Dec. i am looking at end of Jan. how abt 26 Jan midnite flight? heehee... "happy birthday to me" on board the plane wor... i tot it was kinda interesting and different la... but jas said i am crazy ah... hahaha...

okok.. back to studies again... break is over!

official last day of the Semester!!!

HAHAHA~!!! today is the last official day of Semester! of cos my last official lecture was yesterday but today still last day la. in the past when it is last day or last week of uni, my house will b expectionally excited. as in Huiying, Tess & I will do our rounds of announcement respectively. "today is my last day of uni!" said by me and Tess much earlier than Huying who always had her last day on a Friday. hahaha... then 3 of us will think of ways to celebrate the last day or last week before we get into mugging mood for exam. for instance, we will go out for shopping spree or order pizza and feast or go to Freestyle to chill out or have a movie marathon or juz sit in our living room and chat till late. haiz... all these r now my fond memories only. when i tink of the girls, i will juz keep recalling all the funny and interesting things i did with them. crazy but really memorable. :D

so this time round, is juz me. is juz me shouting to myself "today is the last day of uni!" & having a "mini" celebration on my own. hahaha.. well, at tis very moment, i am still holding on to an assignment which is due tomolo. so i oso cannot go out for celebration ah. my celebration with the rest will be tomolo's steamboat dinner. at tis moment, juz let me have my own way of celebration. i decided to put down my assignment for a while and head for the kitchen. can u believe it, i nv step out of my room ever since i had lunch at abt 1pm. it was like 9am go out for breaky, 1pm go out for lunch and after i done my laundry at abt 2pm, i was stuck in my room all the way till abt 6pm. din even go toilet ah! miracle sia! hahaha.. so i need a break! i decided to head for my fav place of the house, the KITCHEN! (Grace named me Iron Chef in Facebook so i muz live up to the name! hahaha..)

i decided to cook myself some proper dishes for dinner to award myself "无惊无险,又过了一个 Semester! woohoo~!!!" juz one short summer of 1 week class and 2 more assignments for tat course, i shall welcome my thesis with both hands! i hope is happily as i dun wanna to work on a thesis which is dreadful. come to tink of tat, i need to spend some time to seriously think abt how i shld set my time line and work on my thesis ah. hmmm...

it had been a long long way since i ate rice and dishes at home! hahaha.. conclusion today is tat i shall NOT do tis often. cos i am super FULL after the rice and dishes ah! gosh~!!! 1 person share is juz so so hard to digest and finish up ah. haha... & my rice cooker very funny one. cannot cook less than half a cup of rice, if not the cooker wun cook my rice. so i had to force in abt 3/4 cup of rice which is kind of torture ah! i dun wanna keep overnite food oso so bo bian had to eat up all SLOWLY~!!! of cos, i still enjoyed my dinner tonight! it was yummilicious ah! heehee... not i wanna praise myself lor. :D & 2 days ago, Grace and Cindy made a very interesting comment. they saw tat i lined up all my ingredients tat i will be using to fry my bee hoon nicely and neatly by the side of the stove so tat i can reached any of them. so Grace was saying is like restaurant kitchen, so organised. hehhee.. Grace, thanks for ur compliment ah! for tis, i muz really thanks my 2nd Auntie. she was the one who "imparted" me tis neatness and organised way of cooking. i juz can't do wat most pple will do. cook, cut and prepare at the same time. i will juz mess up the whole kitchen and burn my food. heehee...

okok.. enough of my crap, photo time!

Fish Fillet with Beancurd.. i found a new way to cook my basa fish fillets. usually i will cook it with porridge or noodles soup. tis time round is stir fry. is yummy!!!

Vege & Carrot with egg.. is a long long time since i last ate tis dish. i like it cos is not salty at all as i nv add any soy sauce. at most juz a pinch of salt. the egg is the base for the dish so is very healthy. heehee...

okok.. back to my essay now.. need to do up nice nice and submit it tomolo morning. so tat i can really say "I'm done!" heehee...

"I will NOT let YOU outwin ME for I WILL DEFEAT & OVERRULE YOU!"

a day when everything just goes wrong. even the simplest meaning i oso can't get it and i need to trouble someone else to explain. waking up early and i tot i can do more things. ended up i juz can't get the tings into my mind. so i decided to go and exercise my muscles and continue my work after that. it was useful initially but i still can't hang on till the end. over engrossed in something made me seems to disconnect from outside world. HP was ringing and yet i can just ignored. refusing to speak over the phone make me feel like a freak. just what is going on with me? am i over stressing myself unnecessarily?

that day i met Christina, my senior from NP. she is oso my senior in UQ. she completed her honours studies last year and currently working in UQ as a tutor and research assistant. as i was toking to her about my honours studies, i finally feel that my message was brought across and understood by someone. she told me when she was studying her honours, she told her groupmates up front that she is a honours student and she need to maintain her GPA so she dun allow any mistakes in any of her assignments. she is a perfectionist so i can understand her point in making her stand clearly at 1st. i am not really a perfectionist but i just want to score! before i took up the honours, pple had been telling me if u dun score for ur honours, ur honours is not going to worth anything. gosh~! do u noe how much pressure that is? facing myself every day in the mirror, i am constantly telling myself that "i can, i will and i need to survive!".

life is not only abt studies. there r many things that i shld care abt. however, at tis moment studies is all that i have. if i dun score well in tis, what else still matters? moreover, my current studies is a choice made out of my own will. if i cannot achieve something good out of something i am willing to do, then what am i still able to achieve? of cos i wun deny there are still many more tricky matters that are overwhelming at the same time. tat is wat life is all abt. if life can always be smooth sailing, no one will have problems.

i noe i can do it! i juz noe i can finish up watever i need to do. & i noe i can still have fun at the same time. all i need to give myself is time to think, space to breathe and confidence to strive again. i want to smile from the bottom of my heart again. it was fine for the past few mths and juz 2 more mths before my 1st half of honours' journey will be completed. i noe i can still smile along now till the end. i noe i can... "I will NOT let YOU outwin ME for I WILL DEFEAT & OVERRULE YOU!"

i need discipline and self-control!

break week is over!!! see wat i have done over the past one week?

- Road Trip to Sunshine Coast & Byron Bay
- Mooncake Festival Celebration
- Making Hakka Abacus Seed

gosh... none of it is related to studies! tis is the most slacking break week i ever had when i am suppose to work hard to finish my assignment before next week and start on my thesis. i am so so behind time now and how am i going to finish my report before the due date. i wan to finish it way before time so tat i can join my angels when they r here! my cousins angels r coming from 12 oct to 17 oct. they are going to gold coast. i have a report due on the 15 oct. i need to get it out of my way so tat i can join my angels in gold coast for tat few days.

"pls pls! dun slack anymore. u have more than u expect to do. in fact u have alot alot to do!!! break week is over, means all FUN has to stop. go back to ur studies and get serious in it! skip ur sleep or watever u oso muz get tings done, pls!!!! Ms Iris Lim, pls get back to ur study mode!!!!"

okok... i shall aim to finish my report by next week end and i can start on my thesis and enjoy myself with my angels when they r here! i promise to be diligent!!!

~this EASY vs that CHALLENGE~

when challenges set in, am i going to run? when tings juz seems hard to accomplish, am i going to avoid? when interest and reality collide, what am i going to choose? juz becos i tink is a difficult task to do, a tougher path to walk, i choose to forgo the chance to even try, am i not ready? am i juz a quitter and loser who dun dare to face reality and challenges?

tings r getting complicated... there r more than i expected. when tings juz dun run my way, i am at wits' end. i lose all directions, all ideas, all decisions... overwhelming responses and advice flooding in from all directions and i juz dunno how to react or response. where my ultimate decision lies, really depends on myself. i noe! i noe tat clearly advice r for me to understand from various perspectives only. eventually my task, my job, my work will be base on my OWN decision. wat do i really wanna? wat do i have in mind to accomplish? an easier way out or a tougher route to endure?

basically no matter which route i take, there will be obstacles, there will be tough moments to get thru and satisfying moments to applaud for. so wat is my way out? minimise on any possible obstacles and choose the easier way out OR go ahead with the tough one, handle any obstacles that come by & juz endure thru?

today was the debating session. we had a morning of very very interesting debating session. From the topic on "shld sex tourism be legalised?" to "is labour turnover a threat to hotel industry?" to "hotel industry is unethical" to empowerment increase hotels' employees' efficiencies", the whole debating session was juz so interesting, exciting, challenging and nerve breaking, nerve breaking for speakers as we had to stand in front of the class to present our speech. we were all shaking and shivering. i had a hard time stablising my hands sia. but i juz had to brace thru tat 3mins and still worry abt pple not understanding me & not to go over time. whahaha... in the end, i actually forget abt my team's team line for our argument! :p but overall i juz felt tat our debate was GREAT! Bravo, team! we did a good job! coordinated very well & very attentive and supportive. good speakers (sorry for my mistake ah!) & very responsible support personnels! no matter if we won the debate, we r the BEST! woohoo~!!!

as for the presentation yesterday, i tink overall we did a fairly good job to keep it within time limit and be clear of our points. no overloading of information for the audience and we addressed the topic well. had a video of our presentation but is with a fren. still waiting for it to come to me before i can load it. mean while, let me juz share some photos taken with my class & during lunch with some of them.

tat's my hyperactive and friendly class... all of us with our lecturer hidden somewhere in the middle. the one who had rather little hair... whahaha...

probably tis will be better to identify him. yeahz... the one the in middle is our lecturer and the rest r my debating teammates. our lecturer is a businessman working in Sydney. so he will fly in on Thursday nite for class on fri and sat then fly back to Sydney on Sat nite. he always come in with his luaggage on Sat class. whahaha... see my lovely teammates from the debate grp. supportive and cooperative grp of fun-loving pple. enjoyed working and playing hangman with them. whahaha... ohhhh... tat's our team line! Labour Turnover, Let it Be!!! we showed it during debate whenever a speaker said the team line. heehee... it was rather amusing.

over lunch @ Hawken Drive, Salt & Battery Fish & Chips. while waiting for the food to be served, photo taking time!

no sight of food... so more photos pls... me, Vivian, Jia Ning...

let's have a toast! cheers to the great job done for debate!

lunch was great... company was fun... & we had good time laughing at all kind of silly jokes & enjoying the good food. heehee...

now i can have some breathing time and space before i head into my next research paper. the most scary one of tis semester... my business research methods' research paper. haiz... how to do a paper for a topic which it understand me but i dun understand it leh? aiyyyoooo... before i start cracking my head for it, i shall have a good nite sleep. i miss my comfortable bed so much sia... & is time for me to recover my loss of membership fees by going to the Gym ah! aiyoooo... Fiona!!! Cardio session pls!!!!
