Farewell, Grandpa Lee! May you rest in peace. 李爷爷,请您一路好走!

For the past 1 week, it has been a difficult and emotional period for us in Singapore. On 23 March 2015, Monday, we woke up to a devastating news that our 1st Prime Minister, who is also the Founding Father of Modern Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, aged 91, has passed away peacefully in the Singapore General Hospital after being admitted for more than a month. I was definitely shocked by the news as I just shared a note of well wishes for his speedy recovery on my Social Media platforms the day before. Though it was reported that his condition deteriorated further as days passed by, I was still hoping for a miracle and that I can see him waving to us with his radiant smile during our SG50 National Day Parade in August this year. However, the miracle didn't come.

Mr Lee's great vision has initiated and created several legacies which have benefited many people over the different generations. For the past 1 week, as people shared about their memories of Mr Lee and how their lives have been impacted by his legacies, I was thinking "What about me?". While I was not born in the years when he fought hard to transform Singapore into a metropolis, and I don't know him personally (Closest "personal encounter" was a photo taken with his wax figure in the Madame Tussaud Museum in HKG. Even it was just a wax figure, I tried to hold his hand like a granddaughter holding onto the hand of a grandfather. ^.^), my life and my family's well-beings are greatly impacted by his legacies.

Photo with Mr Lee's wax figure at Madame Tussand Museum in HKG in 2012
In fact his legacies can be seen in our everyday life. Not going to list them all but just going to share those that I can personally associate with:

1) My mother and her family were formally staying in Kampong Bukit Ho Swee. When the Bukit Ho Swee Fire broke out in 1961, my mother's house was burnt down and they became homeless. Mr Lee promised the residents of Kampong Bukit Ho Swee that they would be able to move into their new homes within 8 to 9 months. He and his team delivered the promise by building public flats with proper sanitation to house these residents within 9 months. All thanks to Mr Lee, my grandma and her 7 children (including my mother) managed to have a roof over their head within such a short period of time.

2) Both my parents only had education up to primary school level. With that, they are not able to hold jobs with high salaries. Therefore, owning a house and starting a family back then were challenging tasks for them. All thanks to Mr Lee for introducing the "Home Ownership Scheme" (居者有其屋), my parents were able to have an asset of their own and started a family shortly after. As they aged, they will be able to retire and stay comfortably in the 3-room flat at Bukit Merah which they had bought in the early 80s. And with the scheme, I know I will be able to afford to get my own flat and be a proud owner in a few years' time as well.

3) I went through 10 years of pri and sec sch studies in both English and Chinese (Mother Tongue). All thanks to Mr Lee's education legacy of Biligual Education which laid a good foundation for me in both English and Chinese. I am able to read, write and speak comfortably in both languages. Hence I managed to converse with people from the Western and Eastern worlds easily during my overseas uni studies in Australia. My schoolmates from China were impressed when I was able to write in Chinese as I helped to translate some of the lecture notes for them. When I started working, being biligual provided an advantage. I was able to communicate with my overseas counterparts confidently in both languages. Especially with associates from China, speaking in our Mother Tongue has helped to establish closer working relationship with them.

4) As I travelled down the roads in Singapore, I felt sense of serenity and happiness as I looked at the greens along the sides of the roads. This is more evident whenever I'm back from overseas trips. As I travelled from Changi Airport to home along the expressway, I will always be greeted by the greenery on the sides of the roads. They seems to be smiling to me and giving me a warm welcome back to home. Whenever I was hosting overseas guests in Singapore, they would always talk about our greenery. They were surprised to see so many tress and shrubs growing along the sides of the roads as they travelled down the expressways from Changi Airport to their hotels. They were even more impressed when these greens are not limited to the roads to/fro airport but they can also be seen in every corner of Singapore. With that, I am always proud to share with my guests that Singapore is a "City in the garden" and that make us uniquely different from many city states in the world. All thanks to Mr Lee, our "Chief Gardener".

As we moved on after 1-week of mourning, I would like to pen my thoughts for the great politician and icon of Singapore in my blog by recognizing his hardwork, honoring his spirit and continuing his legacies.

When my grandpa passed away 20 years ago, I was greatly affected. Till date, I can vividly remember his daily practices and characteristics and I believed that he will always be somewhere around to make sure that my family and I are doing well and good. With Mr Lee, I believed that he will still be watching over Singapore as he simply cannot let go of his country and his people. And we have to continue to work hard in our own ways to bring Singapore's success forward in order not to disappoint him.

Goodbye, Mr Lee! (Source: Instagram)

to be fair..

Once again, I am hearing people around me grumbling and complaining abt Singapore govt. usually I don’t like to get involved. However, this time around, I chose to speak up and expressed my views as I felt that they did not make a fair statement. Ended up, it was not a pleasant discussion. I don’t wish to explain further, so I chose to express my views on my blog instead. Haha.. after so long, my blog is revived! But with such a heavy topic…

I really don’t understand why do people have to amplify on the bad and totally ignoring the good? They are always complaining about all the bad things done by the govt but have they ever bother to compliment on the good contributions made by our govt? Maybe they did, but I guess it will be minimum compliments. They remembered when the train system break down, how much people suffered and how the govt did not do enough to help. They remembered when the flood came, how businesses were affected and how govt did not do enough to assist. Did they forget about the good things and efforts that the govt put in? Don’t they remember that without govt’s home ownership scheme, many of us will not be able to own a house? Don’t they remember without the govt’s effort in planning and building, we will not be enjoying good living lifestyle within a good living environment? Don’t they remember without the regulations and systems in place, we will not have a safe and secure environment? Without the govt’s foresight, we will not be able to have a stand in the international platforms and be recognized when we are just a small red dot on the world globe? Why are we so selfish and ungrateful and forget to look at the good sides and only focus on the negatives?

I do agree that our govt is not perfect and there are rooms for improvement. However, we need to give them time to improve and change. We need to give fair statements and comments about them and not only keep thinking about the bad things. Is this human nature, that we are always stingy in giving people credits and compliments? However, when it comes to the bad comments, we can talk about it non-stop for 3 days 3 nights or more. For instance when we were young, when we were in our teens, when we were in our adulthood and when we grow old, we always don’t get many compliments for the good things we do. The good comments are only limited to “Good Job! Well done! Keep it up!” and that’s about all. However, if we make a small mistake, the bad comments will be double or triple, “Why are u so stupid? Can’t even do a simple thing correctly? Why are u so clumsy? U are really hopeless”. Isn’t this example applicable to our negative views about our govt? For the good deeds they do, we take it for granted and never really thank them for it or even acknowledge their efforts. We think that we are “paymasters” so they are to do the job without us thanking them. However, when there are any slight errors, we will criticize them as much as we can. Is this being fair to them? It is the same for us at work. Our bosses expect us to do our job well and fulfill all tasks no matter what as we are paid to do so. When we make mistakes, they are unhappy abt it and will reprimand for it. However, when we perform well, our efforts are not recognized or not appreciated. This is when we will complain “Why are bosses so mean? Why our bosses didn’t even say thank u for our contribution? Why are we taken for granted by our bosses?” Ask ourselves - “Govt paymasters”, have we ever sincerely thank our govt - the payees for whatever they have done for us all these while? Didn’t we take whatever they do for us for granted too?

We always complain that our govt treat foreigners better than Sporeans, giving benefits to foreigners instead of to Sporeans. Did Sporeans realize that from day 1 when we were born, we have been receiving benefits from the govt? For instance, we have heavily subsidized school fees which enable most sporeans to be able to complete education up to at least secondary level. Our medical fees (unless those special medical procedures) are also heavily subsidized. With the middle to high living standards enjoyed by most Sporeans, many of us are able to go overseas for travel at least once a year. On the other hand, many citizens in 1st or 2nd world countries may not be able to have such opportunities at all. Not talking abt the 3rd world countries but talking abt countries like neighbouring Malaysia and economic powerhouse like US or Australia. Some of their people may not even have the chance to travel to the neighbouring state, needless to say overseas countries. Aren’t we more fortunate as compared to them?

I don’t come from a rich family. My parents live in HDB 3 room flat. My mum is a factory work who earns less than $2k a month. My dad used to work as a plumber and later as coffee shop assistant and cleaner and he earned about $800 per month. Currently he is not working. But thanks to govt’s home ownership scheme, my parents can at least own a house. And thanks to govt’s CPF scheme, they have $$$ for old age and their medical treatment. And thanks to govt’s regulations, my brother and I were able to finish our primary and secondary education with heavily subsidized school fees in govt schools. While I don’t have rich parents, I am more fortunate than many people as I have great grandparents and supportive aunties and uncles. With their teachings and financial assistance, I was able to go overseas for my studies and be able to gain experiences which I will never get to experience in Singapore. with all these experiences, I learnt to appreciate my life and home in Singapore even more. Although I love travelling and I enjoyed my times in Aussie while studying, I have never thought of leaving Spore for good. This is the place where I was born in, where I live in, where I belongs to and where I call home. This is the place which I am proud of. Whenever I met foreigners during my travel and when asked where am I from? I will proudly say “Singapopre”. I felt extremely happy when they say they know where Spore is and they have been there and they love the place for its cleanliness and safe environment. I felt upset when people do not know who we are and thought that we are part of China. This is when I will tell them who we really are and where we are and what they can do when they visit Singapore. Merely doing my part as a Singaporean introducing my home country.

Many friends claimed that when foreigners come to Spore, they are taking away our land, our home and our jobs. Why must we feel negative about it? If we are good, we can always compete with them? Many people are going into China too. Why don’t the Chinese felt the same way as we do? Why do they still think they r the biggest, strongest and greatest and that they don’t feel threaten by foreigners? Not because they have a large population but because they are united as one and they are proud of their own identity as a Chinese national. To a certain extend, I amazed by the Chinese for their unity. I admire them for the high ego and strong pride for their country, their nation and their identity as a Chinese. I can’t say likewise for my fellow Sporeans. Yes, we have many foreigners in Spore. But we are the owners of this land. Why must we be afraid of them or feel inferior to them? Why can’t we believe that we are better than them and that they can’t steal away our homeland and our jobs? Why can’t we learn from the Chinese? Do we want our country to be closed up to foreigners and just be contented among our own community? Do we want be a frog in the well? If that really happen, I think all Sporeans will start to scold the govt. “Why not opening up to foreigners to invest and create more job opportunities and strengthen economic growth?”. Why can’t Sporeans stand together and be proud to be Sporeans? One fine day, if Spore suffers attack from enemy, I wonder how many of us are willing to stay in Spore to help the country tide over the crisis? Instead will most of us make use of the opportunity to run away?

I am not siding the govt and pro govt. I just felt that we should be appreciative and grateful to what have been done for us. We should not only amplify on the bad and forget about the good. While people already know about the govt’s good sides, we should still be generous in giving our compliments and assurance. When there are mistakes, we should be more tolerance and give them a chance to learn and be better. Esp when we are talking about Spore and the Spore govt which belongs to you and me and every Sporean.

personal thoughts on GE 2011

After reading my cousin's blog and some friends' blogs, i realised how lazy i was for the past few months. hahaha.. i haven not update my blog diligently. work and studies are taking up most of my time. during my free time, i only wish to slag and nua in front of TV dramas after TV dramas. :D now i shall revive my blog!!!

topic for discussion today: GE 2011 - the most "in" and hot topic discussed in Singapore recently as this is the most exciting GE we have experienced for many many years. as a Sporean, i would like to note down my tots as well.

in 2 days' time, voting will commences. for many 1st time voters, this is surely an exciting moment. for people like me, so much so we would like to do our part as a Sporean, we can't. as our constituency is securely taken care by our honourable MM. but still i had been following the updates abt GE 2011 and i have so much thots everyday. whenever i go home, i will sure share my thots with my Aunt. So she said "if you have ur views, u shld pen them down." yeah, y not? since i have my own platform - my blog. i dun have any flowery description, watever i am writing is how i felt.

though i dun study politics, i am very interested in what is going on with our government and political system. Simply becos this is my home, a place where i belong. i am concerned how the system in placed will affect my life, my loved ones's well being and our future. after hearing so much from all parties during these 2 weeks of campaigning, i am more assured to stand by my views.

Aunt and Bro always said tat i pro-PAP. oh well, to a certain extend, i do admit. my point of view is very simple: i go for the party who can make Spore grow as a nation and move forward for better prospects. my support goes for leaders who wholeheartedly care for us regardless of race, religion, gender and age at grassroots level and at the same time be able to assist Singapore to gain recognition at an international level. didn't PAP done all the above? for tat, i respect them and i am really grateful for wat they did for us. of cos, there are areas which i am looking forward for improvement by them and i know they will do it. PAP is still PAP and they stand by their directions and beliefs. but for the new generation like us to accept them, they just have to fine tune their style of working. make us understand and convince us will be more feasible than throwing harsh words on us.

of all issues discussed so far, personally i tink only 3 issues are really relevant. the rest of them r just picked up becos there's a need to stir some noise for argument for GE.

Issue 1: Housing
YES! Singapore houses r getting more and more costly. furthermore, many of them r suppose to be public housing which shld be made affordable for general public. Govt is and in fact did make changes to ease this prob. they may have step in too late to curb the rise in pricing. but personally whatever have been suggested by our dear opp parties are not feasible. Rental Scheme for housing? i almost fainted when i heard this. House is an asset. shouldn't we move forward towards an era which almost all singaporeans get to own an asset? i am definitely for the idea of Home ownership and i am sure many people will be proud to be a home owner. just days ago, one of my fren told me that he is proud being an owner of the flat he is staying in with his parents. so for all that, y do we have to go backwards 5 to 10 yrs with the idea of rental scheme for housing?

if one would like to own a flat/house, one needs to just go within one's means. if you can only manage a normal 4-room flat, y do you have to force yourself to go for a 5-room DBSS flat? adding to ur monthly burden and u will have tons of debts to clear.

if one would like to own a flat/house, one will have to work for it. how can one expect the govt to pay half and u pay half and then u own the flat? so can govt stay half in ur flat then? u just have to work for whatever u wan to own.

Issue 2: Transportation
congested MRT, buses and traffic... i totally agreed. i gave up taking MRT to work as i can nv get up the train at TPY so i chose the alternative of bus. long waiting time during peak hours and i agree too. at times when i am in rush, i will complain "stupid! why the train is taking 6 mins to come?"

but i have stayed in Australia for 3 yrs, as compared, our situation in Spore is really not as bad as the big cities. in Aussie, we have to wait for almost 20 mins for bus, ferry or train. as compared, 6 mins is really nutting. if u r really rushing, practise self discipline and step out of ur house 6 mins earlier than usual.

overseas visitors always praise tat Spore's MRT system is very well-connected and organised. i agree with that. with the new upcoming MRT lines, i believe our transport system will be even better. but all these systems take time to be built and integrated to our current transport system. while waiting for the systems to be fully ready, we jus need to seek for alternative and go around the inconvenience. for instance when i travel to Tampines from Dobby Ghaut every sat, i used to take EWL and that takes me about 30mins (including waiting time) and i can't get a seat most of the time. So i chose to take the Circle Line from Dobby Ghaut to Paya Lebar and change to EWL to Tampines. It may take a slighly longer time (abt 35 to 40mins), but i can find a seat and the carriage is less crowded. we just have to be a little less lazy and take the little effort to seek for an alternative if u tink the usual route is not ideal.

Issue 3: Influx of FTs
i think this is an issue that has been amplified and is an issue which almost all developing countries will face. in Aussie, there are such problems. in Macau & HK, there are such issues as well. and people in all these countries are complaining too. but we can not stop FTs from coming in. we just have to live with it and work the best way out of it. when i was in Australia, we are known as the foreigners and i am sure the Aussies see us differently. As foreigners then, we did not care much for the locals as well. 80% of the bus or trains are full of us - foreigners, speaking in our own language. the Aussies are feeling uncomfortable but we didn't care and carry on and so the locals will just have to tolerate. Back home, we are the locals and other nationalities are the foreigners and we are complaining about them. felt as if in foreign land when almost half of the people in the train or bus speak in different languages, blaming them for causing an increase in housing and increase in cost of living. blah blah blah... and becos Spore is small, we can see foreigners everywhere we go. not like in big countries, they are scattered all around. personally, i oso felt uneasy with so many of them around and i do have some prejudice against certain nationalities. but since they are here already, we just have to accept them and learn to live with them. personally i felt tat Govt may not have prepared us well enough with this sudden influx. hence it seems like a sudden shock to most of us and the integration part is still lacking. so there is a need to improve on the integration part and not stop them from coming in totally. Govt need to do something, Sporeans oso need to do something on our part. be more tolerance and forgiving and accepting.

other issues: Income Tax, GST, COE...

Income Tax: 20% as compared to many countries of 40% to 50%, i tink tis issue is not an issue.

GST: 7% as compared to other countries of 10%, 13% or more, this is not an issue too. in some countries, u may not see the GST as listed but it is already included in the price. so we tot how come pple dun need to pay GST like us? oh well, but their items already cost more than ours cos GST is already hidden within the cost.

COE: rising COE so cannot afford a car, then don't buy a car. simple as that. unless u really really need a car, then just get one within ur means. car = status, so many pple want to buy a car? i think this is quite lame excuse. so when one cannot afford a car, one dun have status? and one will start to scold Govt for rising COE. stop acting like a child and be more responsible for ur own desires. if u wanna a car to represent ur status, live with the rising COE and stop asking Govt to do u a favour to cut on COE so that u can satisty ur desires.

Issue of Govt use our money to invest unnecessarily and lost our money in investment: people blame govt for losing our $$ in investment. 1stly, no one aims to lose $$ when doing investment. investment comes with risk and the lost in investment was unexpected. 2ndly, invest the $$ so that we can "grow" the $$$. is a fact tat u and i know. for instance, in personal context, with our own $$$, we will seek to "grow" our $$. we buy lottery, shares, bonds and other investments to "grow" our $$$. to be real, who dun like to have more $$$, right? govt is trying to "grow" our $$$ as well. 3rdly, if govt dun invest, they will be scolded as well. people will say "govt so stupid, dunno how to invest and earn more $$ for us". see how difficult it is to please Sporeans.

above r juz some thots which i can recall and would like to pen down my thots.

basically i am a sporean with simple wishes. i just wish for fellow Spoeans to be less demanding and learn to give and take and not expect to be treated like kings and queens and demand for watever they want. i just wish for fellow Spoeans to think for the big picture in making Spore progress together as a nation and not be calculative in the nitty gritty issues and hinder Spore's development. i just wish for fellow Spoeans to understand that we need leaders to lead us into developing as a global city recognised at international level and not leaders who wanna make use of our reserves unnecessarily and not leaders who have not lived in Spore for more than 30 years and coming back now to say they want to serve the people.

my wishes sound very pro-PAP? haha.. I just felt that we are far too small to be able to have too much differences in our political system. Yes, we can have alternative voices but we need alternative voices that make sense. If we can have that, i think it will good for our political systems. however, if we can't have, i rather do without as it will only jeopardize the stability of our govt. since school days till now, whenever i write the SWOT analysis for Spore, secure and stable govt is always the 1st criteria i put down under strength of Spore and i hope i can still do the same for now and in future. whenever overseas friends comment abt Spore, their first comment is always "Spore has a safe and stable govt." i hope i can still hear such comments in future.

i dun get to vote and exercise my right as a Sporean. i really hope my friends who have the right to vote will think carefully, be objective and vote wisely. it is our future that we are talking about. we cannot afford to lose too much as we do not have the ability to withstand it. honestly, if anything goes wrong to Spore, i doubt we younger generation can hold on together and weather the tough times together as a nation. simply becos our new generation of Sporeans are too pampered, lack of exposure and self-centered. we can't do wat our forefathers did, we can't do wat our grandparents or parents did. most of us are simply too arrogant and ignorant.

Praying Hard

Is the new year and i should start the new year with a happy post. however, i just would like to share my thoughts on the current flood situation in Brisbane, a place where i spent 3 yrs of uni life.

as i was watching the pictures and video clips and reading the updates about the situation, i teared. my uni, the apartment where i used to live in are all in waters. familiar places around the neighbour are flooded as well. really heartbreaking to know tat.

praying hard tat the situation will not worsen and that everything will get back to normal soon. praying hard that my friends in Brisbane are safe and sound.

on the other hand, i felt really lucky. lucky that nutting of such happened when i was in Brisbane. is really a blessing in disguise

ColorGenics profile

seems tat everyone has tis one their blogs.. i shall try it too... here r my results:

http://www.goldinuniverse.com/

You have a vivid imagination and this is good. Great inventors, explorers all had inventive, imaginative minds. Your friends and acquaintances may consider you over-imaginative and given to fantasy or day-dreaming. So what ? this is a part of your character and charm.

You are very self-sufficient and methodical. You presume to know where you are going but need to find a person who will recognise the way you are, not be too demanding and who is, as they say in Italy, 'Simpatico'. - tis is pretty true abt me, i guess... :)

The situation at this time is one of considerable distress. You feel trapped and you are looking for some way out. You can find solace in the arms of someone who cares so long as there is no long-term emotional involvement.

You are being unduly influenced by the situation that is all around you. You do not like the feeling of loneliness and whatever it is that seems to separate you from others. You know that life can be wonderful and you are anxious to experience life in all its aspects, to live it to the full. You therefore resent any restriction or limitations that are being imposed on you and you insist on going it alone. - i would tink tis is really true abt myself... hee...

You are anxious about all the limitations to which you are subjected to at this time. You feel that you are not valued for what or who you are. You need OUT. So why procrastinate any longer - MOVE!

Girls & Ladies...

in general, i tink most girls/ladies tend to complain when someone commented tat they dun like their age. when one is being said to look younger than her actual age, one may tink whether the other party finds tat she is kiddy looking or childish in thinking. when one is being said to look older than her actual age, one will be rather upset and start to stock up on facial products, wrinkle cream and anti-ageing lotion. when we were young, we tried to dress as mature little adults. when we r much older now, we try to dress casually as over-age little girls. haha.. contradicting thinking indeed.

& as one starts to grow older, the way on how pple address u differs too. the very common example will be the encounters @ hawker centres. rem the days when u were being addressed as "小妹" or "Ah-Girl" by the chicken rice stall owner or fishball noodles seller? i rem tat when i was in pri 3, i had tis really short and tomboyish hairstyle. i was mistaken as "Ah-Boy" by the chicken rice stall owner. haha... then as time passed by, the greetings became "小姐" or "Miss". by the time when ur face starts to show the signs to show ur age, pple may start to address u as "Auntie". unless u manage to meet some really nice and kind hawkers who r so good & polite with their words, u will then escape the fate to be called "Auntie". & i am pretty sure tat these hawkers muz be having really good business from these "小姐们". heehee...

silly technical errors or pure laziness of human beings???

beginning of the lunar new year, i encountered the 1st unlucky day of the yr. it was supposed to be my driving practical test yesterday. i went for revision lessons diligently from mon to wed in order to prepare myself for the test. i tried to read thru all the little notes i wrote for different test routes the night before so tat i wun forget to do the necessary lane changing at the respective junction. on thurs itself, i went for the warm up drive abt 1 hr before my test. i was waiting anxiously and nervously yet my name was never called. when i went to check with the traffic police dept, i was stunned by their replies. they DID NOT have my records! which means i can't take my test at all! WTH~!!! my 1st reaction was how can it be as i already paid for it. i even had my booking records and payment receipts printed out. i showed to the examiner, but they juz can't do anything. they asked me to check with the driving centre instead. at tat point in time, i was really agitated. i tried very hard to suppress my emotion and went over to the booking counter to explain my situation. i was referred to one of the senior staff in the office and he tried to look into the issue by checking out where was the error and try to resolve the issue by getting me the earliest available test date. he explained tat becos i did an online booking at abt midnite, the booking data was somehow lost in the process when they sent the updates to the traffic police dept at 12midnite every day. so i questioned them whether they have a 2nd round of confirmation for list of testees. i was given a very shocking ans as "NO". i was really disappointed by this ans as i tink there shld be some form of re-confirmation on both driving centres and the traffic police dept before the test. & another disappointment is tat since the driving centre allow pple to use online booking and transaction, updating shld not be done only once a day and when errors of such occur, they simply push the blame to technical fault. honestly, i dun buy their explanation. but at that point in time, i really can't do anything much. my mood is totally dampened and all i wanna was to be able to settle on a new test date asap. thankfully they were able to get me a new test date which is abt 1 week later and gave me a complimentary lesson. at the end of the day, it is not any complimentary lesson tat matters most. wat matter most is i prepared myself mentally for the test yet i was not even given the opportunity to go for it due to some stupid technical errors which human beings shld be able to prevent it if a little more effort was contributed...

now tat when i calmed down, i was able to blog abt my encounter. & to tink back abt wat my brother said abt viewing the issue from another point of view in a very "ah-Q" thinking: maybe if i went for the test yesterday, i would have mount kerb and fail the test badly. haha... i guess tat is the only way i can do to comfort myself now.

~Merry Christmas~

~MERRY CHRISTMAS~

last yr i spent my Xmas in Australia. it was a simple celebration at home with Phil and Felicia with our home cooked food. this yr, i spent my Xmas eve and countdown @ Reagan's house. BBQ session cum Fondue indulgence. thanks to Reagan for being a good host in hosting all of us together with the workers from his company. there were lots of fun, laughter and enjoyment, especially when we were on the game of "Werewolf". it was my 2nd time playing this game. previously, my sis-in-law gave me the game as a pressie when i went to Australia for studies. & there was once when there were quite a number of friends gathered @ my house in Australia, so i took out the game and tat was my 1st time playing the game. it was quite fun as there were lots of argument going around. as for my 2nd time playing this game, it was a total different encounter. my brother and his frens had been playing this game for quite a long while, so they are considered as "old birds" in this game. last nite, during the game, they introduced many different characters so i got a bit confusing but it was really funny. so much argument going around. i am kinda addicted to the game as it was like a mind game. it is like a test to see how good one can act and deceive pple as well as a chance to train one in their observation skills. hahaha... 2/4 pple, maybe we can try to play the game during our CNY gathering @ Miss Lock's house. i tink it shld quite fun with so many of us. hahaha...

during the BBQ, my brother suddenly got the idea to lay out the food as if it was a face. does this layout look like a face to u? with eyes, eyebrows, ears, nose and a big wide mouth! :D

Fondue indulgence... yummy~ my favourite sia... but i tink it is really heaty ah. i can feel the after effect now..

side track: on tuesday, i was walking to YCK MRT after my driving lesson & i saw the lovely blue sky. i was attracted to the clear blue sky. it reminded me of Aussie's clear blue sky. so straightaway when i reached the MRT platform, i took out my hp to snap a pic of the lovely sky. however, due to the resolution of my hp, the colour was not as clear as wat i saw.

do the clouds resemeble big cotton candy? hahaha... well, for such lovely clear blue sky, there is a price to pay. the weather for tat particular day was extremely hot and humid. haiz.. y can't we have a cooling day with clear blue sky leh?

after 48 long years...

.... we r finally on our way to our 2nd Olympics medal!!!!

as we all shld know, the journey to taking a medal from the Olympics is never easy. for Spore, it has always been a great challenge for our athletes. as of today.. we FINALLY made it!

@ abt 2.30pm, i tuned in to Channel 601 on SCV for the Semi-final match between Team Singapore and South Korea. i tot the whole match will be over by 5pm so i arranged to meet Huiying and Philip at 5pm. in the end, the duration of the whole match was much longer than i expected. the whole match only ended at abt 6.15pm... is almost 4hrs tough fight with the South Koreans. thru'out the game, i was screaming, cheering and worrying. i was really excited abt the match, so much so tat my grandma was attracted by my screaming and sat down to enjoy the game with me. whahahaha... it was a very close fight and many times during the game, i tot Team Singapore is going to lose! The South Koreans are absolutely brilliant. they r not only good in their skills, but also mentally strong. in each and every of the game, they r very determined to put up a good fight till the very end. of cos our players are brilliant too. i like the last match of singles very much. it was a deciding match as well as the most entertaining and challenging match. is a test of patience, tactics and alertness. it was seriously a narrow win for Team Singapore... however, no matter wat, it is still a winning moment for us. for now, all we can hope for is tat Singapore can perform as well as they can during the finals on Sunday. Singapore, Way to Go!!!

PACK! PACK! PACK!

end of hibernation and slacking mode, is time to... PACK! PACK! PACK! haiz.. i am doing packing now.. YES! yet again! ever since i came to Australia to study, packing at the end of almost every semester seems to be a MUZ-do task. haiz... really dun like packing. so troublesome lor... argh~!!! the only consolation is tat this will be the LAST time i am doing packing for my studies in Australia and tat making packing much easier as all my stuff will only suffer either fate.. fate to be brought back to Spore so into the boxes and luggage OR fate to be thrown away so into the trash bags. i hope to throw more stuff away or leave them behind for others but i always can't bear to. now i muz brainwash myself "the more stuff u bring home, the more rubbish u have to clear from ur room in Spore. so clear the unwanted items NOW!" yes! i have to be clear abt tis. cannot shuang shuang keep tis and keep tat. >.<

hmm.. today last day of exam.. meaning really last day of semester liao wor... holidays officially starts tomolo. tis oso means tat my student concession card can no longer be used la. aiyooo.. have to pay adult price for transportation liao.. sianz... exp leh.. lucky is last week in Brisbane, try to go out less. but dun seems to be possible wor... meeting up with some friends over the week as this shld be the last chance i can meet up with most of them. yeah.. becos tis upcoming week will be my last week staying in Campus Lodge. exciting mth lying ahead in July with me having no permanent lodging, always on my move. haha... i will try to update my blog whenever i can and keep it alive even when i am on my move. so tat i wun lose my faithful audience. hahaha...

back to packing now... haiz..

"Wanted Roamers to Return"

daily entries do not mean tat i am too free. although i am quite free now and am slacking, i dun have the intention to post everyday. is just tat i happened to read up on some interesting articles in the Straits Times newspapers, so i would like to share some of my tots.

today's Saturday Wanted section on Straits Times has red carpets spreaded across the page and with the big headlines of "Wanted Roamers to Return". hmmm... i got very interested to read on cos somehow i am involved as some of the articles tok abt life for some overseas graduates and i am an overseas graduate in Spore ah.

basically this section highlight on the phenomenon as oberserved in Spore whereby there are more and more pple leaving the country for good. they have chosen to migrate to other countries, work and live in these foreign countries. many have chosen to give up their Spore citizenship in searching for a life which is perceived by many of them to be better. so Spore govt is trying to lure these pple whom they r once deemed as 'betrayers' or 'quitters' of Spore. so the reporters interviewed many of these returnees on how they are coping with the life back in Spore. many of them have been away for like more than 5 to 10 years so with the ever-changing landscape of Spore, they will surely meet up with challenges as to how to re-adapt to the life in Spore. the articles oso mentioned on how the Govt is using different approaches to lure the overseas Singaporeans back to Spore. local food r provided at gourmet fair held in the overseas countries. local hawkers r flown over to these countries to prepare local delights for the overseas Singaporeans. on the other hand, using forums to discuss and emphasis on Singapore's economic progress is another popular tactic used to attract these overseas Singaporeans' attention. some of the returnees who r being interviewed feedback tat the actual and main motivating factor for their return to home Singapore is to b able to reunite with their family and loved ones back in Spore. all the previously mentioned tactics will only work for initial period or to a certain extend. cos at the end of the day, the real meaning for returnees to return to home is becos of kinship and family. in addition, the report oso revealed tat many of the young Singaporeans are keen abt migrating and leaving Singapore for good. summarising all these points made by the report, i have my own views too.

1stly, i am very sure tat returnees will have a hard time to re-adjust to the life back in Singapore. for me, whenever i return to Singapore for holidays, i already have difficulty to adapt. for those who have left Singapore for ages, i bet they will take a longer period. as for those young children who r born in other countries and being brought back to live in Singapore with their parents, the process may be even longer and more tedious. however, as mentioned by one of the interviewer, since these returnees choose to return to Singapore, no matter wat kind of lifestyle it will be, juz learn to live with it and adapt. longing to lead the previous lifestyle or grumbles abt current lifestyle in Singapore will not help to make the situation any better. CERTAINLY! i 100% agree with this comment. is true tat there r difficulties to re-adapt and re-adjust but everything can be overcome as long as effort is being put in to get used to the current lifestyle. i can forsee i may have to do some adjustments when i go back to Spore after my studies, but i have faith in myself tat i can do it. the theory is the same for when one 1st arrived into a foreign country. when these returnees 1st arrived into the foreign countries, they had to try to adapt to the local lifestyle. if they can spent the effort to adapt to these foreign countries, i dun see y they can't spend tat effort to adapt to their home country, Singapore. as for me, when i 1st came to Brisbane, i had a hard time adjusting and adapting. but i still get on with it. so when i get back to Singapore, i juz have to put in a little effort to carry out the process once again.

2ndly, i really have to agree tat kinship and family r the impt factors tat can really lure one back to Singapore. true enough tat local delights r attractive components but at the end of the day, they may not be the most impt elements. as for economic progress in Spore, many other countries r doing juz as well as we r, so there is not much to emphaise on, i guess. however, kinship and family shld be the unique elements which one can never find any replacements for. u can choose to eat a different type of food if u can't find ur fav local delights, u can choose to go a country with good economic progress but can u choose ur own family? probably my thinking is very traditional. for me, no doubt tat i love to travel, i love to explore other countries, i dun mind working overseas but at the end of the day, i juz wan to go back to my family, my home whereby i noe i can be safe and secure with my loved ones. to me, kinship is something tat is no amount of money or no other elements can ever replace.

3rdly, young Singaporeans r keen to leave the country as they r complaining abt the stressful lifestyle, pressurising environment and unbalanced lifestyle. they seek to go to countries which they deemed to be able to offer them with a so-called better lifestyle. they feel tat they can excel better in these countries. they feel tat Singapore is too small for them to do something great. they just wan to leave and seek for a 'heaven' in other countries. well, as the saying goes 'grass at the other side is always greener'. how true is this saying, seriously it has to depends. i dun deny tat Singapore is small and tat we have limited resources. i dun deny the fact tat it is a stressful living environment in Spore. work-life balance is hard to maintain in Spore. however, i dun really tink things can be tat bad to drive pple away from the country. to me, no matter where u r, it is ur own mentality tat is deciding ur lifestyle and ur pathway. u can still b tat workaholic when u r in a different country, so where is tat balance lifestyle u r looking for? u can still be as stressful, in fact more stressful as u r in a foreign land where u need to work hard to make sure u earn ur rights to be there. i tink is a good idea to be able to go overseas and experience life in a different environment. Spore is juz so safe and secure tat many of us may not get enough exposure and take many things for granted. travelling to foreign lands may allow us to get out of our comfort zone and broaden our exposure. if at the end of the day, one tinks tat Spore r not the place to live in, one choose to leave the country, i would tink is really becos of one's own mentality and not the country's inadequacy tat drives pple away from the country. call me old fashioned or traditional, at the end of the day, no matter where i am and how long i am away, i juz wanna go back to my home country where i belong.

wat a close shave... *phew*

shoulder to shoulder with a turning bus.. can u imagine how close the distance is? juz 1 more step out, i tink i shld be lying somewhere in the hospital. hmm.. dun mean to post an entry to scare everyone but juz wanna warn everyone to BE CAREFUL when crossing the road ah! dun tink of anything else other than crossing the road safely. i always pay attention when i am crossing the road but juz now i tink i was tinking abt something else. i got distracted and i din notice there was a turning bus and i juz walked out on to the road. i was sort of pushed away back to the platform by the turning bus and the driver had to stop to check if i was okay. tat was how close i was to being knocked down in the middle of Brisbane city. now as i tink back, is damn scary... really a close shave...

Labels for my entries from now on...

whahaha... i finally found out how to categorise my entries! as i was browsing my cousin, Seow Wai's new blog. i decided to look at her blog's source coding and try to rearrange into mine. heehee... finally i managed to add in some label and Categories... woohoo~ in tis way, my blog entries can be more organised with the specific categories. & tis give me an additional task to do after i finish my thesis. yeah.. something to pass time la cos by then i shld be rotting away till the time to travel and for my convo and head back Singapore. my additional task is to: Classify ALL my past entries into the various categories as set. wow! BIG task sia... cos i have over 400 entries la!!! whahaha...

alrighty! back to studies now after spending a few hours on organising my blog layout. i am very excited now cos i am finally at the concluding chapter... soon.. my entry on the thots for my thesis will b up. can't wait for tat faithful day ah! heehee...

spice up our life...

guess with overseas student life, we have gradually learn to be easily contented with watever we have in life. y do i say so? well, when life is always so routine and without much colours here, little action and surprise will be able to spice up our life. be it the giver or receiver.. we will feel some warmth, colour and happiness..

presented to u is a bouquet of lovely flowers sitting beautifully and comfortably in my living/dining room. it has definitely brought some colours into our small unit here and has taken away the usual stillness and dullness. it is a birthday pressie shared among my housemates, Grace & Rachel and myself for our German housemate, Katherina as it is her birthday tomolo! Happy Birthday, Kat! :D

so much of this said here.. shall get back to my work now.. few weeks to end of journey.. i will hang on!
